I was lucky enough to se Hutt in The Tempest last summer. while the production itself was lacklustre, he commanded every scene effortlessly.

I think my favourite Wm. Hutt performance was the paterfamilias in A Long Day’s Journey Into Night, co-starring Tom McCamus, Peter Donaldson, and Martha Henry. The gin rummy scene with Hutt and McCamus was even better than Jack Lemmon and Dean Stockwell’s in the movie, and I consider that very high praise indeed.

I also enjoyed that production of A Long Day’s Journey Into Night. And it will be sad to drive by his house — next to the bridge that bears his name — and know I’ll never again see him sitting on the porch, drinking a martini.
